Editorial policy

Independence

No brand pays for placement, a score or a mention on Strut & Slate, and no brand sees a page before it's published. The site earns affiliate commissions (see the affiliate disclosure), and commissions never set a score or decide a pick. Scores come from the fixed bands on how we pick, applied the same way to every product, so nothing scores higher because it pays more. If a brand ever sends us a product for free, any page that mentions it will say so.

How products are chosen

We start from what beginners actually search for: which call to learn first, which decoy to buy, what choke fits their gun. Established turkey hunting publications help build the starting list of products, but every product is then verified on its own and our reasoning is our own. A product makes a page only if it is currently sold, can be found on Amazon (so the buy button leads somewhere), is documented well enough to score, and suits a first-season hunter. Every roundup includes a budget-friendly option. Custom-shop or waitlisted gear may be mentioned for context, but it's never ranked.

Sourcing standard

• Specs and product facts come from the maker's product page, manual or spec sheet, and each one links to its source. If the maker doesn't publish a spec, we don't state it; the page says “not published” and the score reflects it.
• Constriction, patterning, load and range figures come from choke and load makers' published data, presented as “as published by” the maker and always paired with “pattern your own gun.”
• Regulations come from the relevant state wildlife agency, given as examples, never as universal rules.
• Turkey behavior and hunter safety come from the National Wild Turkey Federation, state wildlife agencies or university extension publications.
• Other review sites and retailer pages are never cited as the source of a fact about a product. An authorized dealer's listing may stand in for a maker's spec when the maker doesn't publish it, and the dealer is named when it does.
• No citation, no claim. Anything we can't verify is cut or written as “the maker doesn't publish this.” Sources are listed at the end of every page.

What we don't claim

Gear we claim to have field-tested: none. We haven't run these calls, hunted over these decoys or patterned these chokes, and we don't say or imply that we have. Sound and performance descriptions are the maker's and are attributed to the maker. We don't list credentials we don't hold, quote Amazon star ratings or review counts, print testimonials, or print a price we can't verify. Photos on the site are licensed stock photos, labeled as illustrative where they appear beside a product, and never presented as our own photos of that product.

Safety and legality

Turkey hunting regulations vary by state: seasons, bag limits, shooting hours, legal shot, gauges and TSS loads, electronic calls, decoys and hunter orange. We never state a rule as universal. When a page gives an example, it names the state agency it came from and tells you to check your own state's rules before you hunt. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

Hunter-safety basics appear wherever they apply, stated plainly: positively identify your target before you shoot, never stalk a gobble, and take care with decoys and fans on public land, where another hunter can mistake them for a live bird. Guns and ammunition aren't sold through this site; they're discussed editorially only, and picks on gun and load pages are chokes, optics and shooting accessories.

How pages are written

Drafting tools, including AI writing tools, may be used to help draft pages. Every page is then reviewed for accuracy against its cited sources before it's published, and nothing is published on the strength of a tool's memory: every spec, figure and rule on a page traces to a source, and those sources are listed on every page. The byline is Mike M., who is responsible for what the site publishes. Copy is written in plain US English for a beginner, with jargon (“TSS,” “constriction,” “shock gobble”) explained the first time it appears.

Update cadence

• Roundups and comparisons: re-checked at least every 90 days, and whenever a pick goes unavailable.
• Every January and February: a full pre-season refresh of every roundup and comparison before spring seasons open. Availability and specs are re-verified, and discontinued picks are replaced.
• Guides: re-checked every six months, including the maker documents and agency pages they cite.
• A page's “updated” date changes only when its content changes, never on a routine redeploy.

Corrections

If something on a page is wrong or out of date, use the contact page or email contact@strutandslate.com. We check the claim against its source, aim to fix a verified error within seven days, and log the change with its date on the page. Broken source links are repaired, or the fact is re-verified against a new source.
