How we pick

The First-Season Score: what it measures, the weights for every category, the exact scoring bands, where the numbers come from, and the claims we refuse to make. Every page with picks on it links here.

What the score measures

Strut & Slate is written for one reader: the hunter adding turkey to the calendar who has never called a bird in. So the First-Season Score asks what that hunter needs to know before buying. Can I learn to run this call before opening morning? Will it still work if it rains? Can I carry it into the woods and set it up without a fight? Does the maker tell me which loads this choke is built for?

Every category has its own rubric of four or five metrics, each scored from 0 to 10, always in the same order. The overall score is the weighted mean of those metrics, rounded to one decimal. The weights in each category add up to 100, so the math is simply each score times its weight, added up and divided by 100. The same code that renders a product card computes its overall, so a page can never show an overall that disagrees with the metrics beside it.

Scores come only from published evidence: the maker's specs, materials, instructions and warranty terms, and published standards. They are not measurements we took, and no page says otherwise.

The weights

Each category weighs what matters most to a beginner in that category. For calls, how fast you can learn one carries the most weight. For chokes, whether the maker rates it for the load you plan to shoot carries the most. For decoys, public-land safety is scored on its own, because a decoy that draws another hunter's attention is a real risk.

The scoring bands

These are the exact rules. They apply to every product in every category:

Only published figures and claims count: the maker's own product page, spec sheet or manual first; an authorized dealer's listing as a labeled fallback.
A figure the maker doesn't publish earns the “not published” band. We never estimate a number and never infer one.
Bonuses never push a metric above 10.
Two people applying these bands to the same sources should get the same score. If you don't, tell us.

1. Turkey calls (box, pot, mouth, push-button) and call kits

Beginner learning curve (30%). 3. Turkey decoys

Realism (20%). Starts at 5. Plus 1 for each of: full-body 3D rather than a silhouette or 2D decoy · the maker states hand-painted, realistic or photo-realistic paint, or feather detail · a flocked head, or a real-feather or fabric-feather option · interchangeable heads or multiple postures in one decoy · accepts a real fan (strutters).

5. Turkey chokes

Where the data comes from

In this order, and each fact is labeled with the source it came from:

The maker. Product and spec pages, manuals, warranty pages, and choke and load makers' published constriction and patterning charts. This is where sounds, surfaces, reeds, materials, weights, dimensions, rated loads, thread systems, battery life and warranty terms come from.
An authorized dealer's listing, when the maker's page doesn't publish the figure or can't be read. The dealer is named in the source label, and the fact is attributed to it.
Published standards and published patterning data, always presented as “as published by” the maker or standard, and always paired with the same advice: pattern your own gun before you trust any yardage chart, including ours.
State wildlife agencies for anything about seasons, legal methods, hunter orange or decoys, and the National Wild Turkey Federation, state agencies and university extension publications for turkey behavior and hunter safety.

Other review sites and retailer pages are never the source of a fact about a product. When a figure isn't published anywhere we can cite, the page says “not published” and the score reflects it. Every product card links each spec to its source, and every page ends with its full source list.

Gear we claim to have field-tested: none

We haven't run these calls in the woods, hunted over these decoys, sat in these blinds or patterned these chokes, and no page on this site says or implies that we have. Plenty of turkey gear reviews lead with field testing. We can't honestly make that claim, so we don't.

What we offer instead is reproducible: the same published specs, the same maker instructions and the same fixed bands, applied the same way to every product, with every input linked. Sound and performance descriptions are always the maker's, and they're attributed to the maker (“the maker calls it raspy”), never presented as something we heard. If you disagree with a score, you can check the arithmetic.

How picks and awards are chosen

A product can become a pick only if it clears all of these:

Real and currently sold. Confirmed on the maker's site or a major retailer when the page is written.
Findable on Amazon, so the “Check price on Amazon” button leads to the product.
Beginner-appropriate. Mainstream, available and documented well enough to score. Custom-shop or waitlisted gear can be mentioned in the text, but it isn't ranked.
A budget-friendly option on every roundup, described in words, never with a number we can't verify.
No guns and no ammunition. Amazon doesn't sell either, so shotguns and turkey loads are discussed editorially only. Picks on gun and load pages are chokes, red dots, slings and pattern targets.

Picks are ranked for the reader of that page, and each one shows its First-Season Score and every metric behind it. The award label on a roundup goes to its first pick for that page's use case. We're buyer-first: when a cheaper or easier-to-learn pick scores within 0.3 points of a pick above it, the page says so plainly. Every pick carries a “Skip this if” line naming who shouldn't buy it, and no pick is ever listed with “cons: none.”

Commissions never set a score or decide a pick, and no brand pays for placement. How the site earns money is on the affiliate disclosure; how pages are sourced, written and corrected is in the editorial policy.

How prices work

Prices come from Amazon, and Amazon changes them often. We never print a price we can't verify, so every buy button reads “Check price on Amazon” and the current price is the one you see on Amazon. A live price feed may be added later. If it is, a price will show inside the button with an “as of” time, and it will disappear automatically once it's more than 48 hours old rather than go stale.

Safety and state rules

Turkey hunting regulations vary by state: seasons, bag limits, shooting hours, legal shot, gauges and TSS loads, electronic calls, decoys and hunter-orange requirements. We never state a rule as if it applies everywhere. When a page gives an example, it cites the state wildlife agency it came from and tells you to check your own state's rules. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

Safety notes appear where they matter and are stated plainly: positively identify your target before you shoot, and never stalk a gobble, because the “bird” you're sneaking toward may be another hunter. That is also why the decoy rubric scores public-land safety on its own.

Updates and corrections

Roundups and comparisons are re-checked at least every 90 days, and in a full pre-season refresh every January and February, before spring seasons open: availability, specs and picks.
Guides are re-checked every six months.
A page's “updated” date changes only when its content changes, never on a routine redeploy.
