Best Jake and Hen Decoy Combos for a First-Season Setup

A combo here means a hen and a jake sold together, in one box, by the maker. We left out Avian-X's hen and jake combos: when we checked on 2026-09-22, Amazon carried only reseller bundles of single Avian-X decoys, not a combo from Avian-X itself.

Each pair is scored on the First-Season Score for decoys: packability and weight 25%, realism 20%, setup speed 20%, durability 20% and public-land safety 15%, with the bands published on our methodology page. Every pair includes a jake, so every pair scores 6 of 10 on public-land safety, and the other four metrics decide the order. Where two pairs tie, the more durable one goes first. We haven't set these decoys out in the woods. Scores come from maker pages, plus dealer listings where the maker's own page was thin, and each pick notes which.

What a jake and hen pair is for

A pair shows a scene a single hen can't, and the makers are specific about the scene they're selling. Primos sizes its Lil' Gobbstopper pair to match “smaller, less intimidating turkeys that make easy targets for gobblers to bully.” Higdon pairs a laydown hen with a semi-aggressive quarter-strut jake. Dave Smith Decoys' Mating Motion Pair shows a jake trying to mount a hen, and moves him on a cord. Montana's Purrfect Pair lets you pick: the hen poses as a feeder, looker or breeder, the jake as a feeder or an aggressive brawler.

The trade is safety. A hen alone scores 9 of 10 on our public-land safety metric, and every pair on this page scores 6, because the jake is shaped like a gobbler. On private ground where you know who else is hunting, that trade may be worth making. On busy public land, it's a good reason to start with a hen and add the jake later. The next two pairs trail by half a point. The Primos and the H.S. Strut pairs both fold and both score 6.7. The Purrfect Pair's lead comes from what Montana publishes that the others don't: a weight, a folded size and more than one pose per decoy.

Every value links to the page it came from. A dash means that figure isn't published, and the score treats it as missing.

The top pick's catch: bring a bag

Montana designs the Purrfect Pair to ride in a vest or pack, and there's no bag in the box. That's convenient, and it's the one thing we'd change. The NWTF's public-land advice is to “carry decoys in a bag and not in your hand or turkey vest,” because “exposed parts of the decoy can look like the real thing, provoking an accidental shooting.” A jake's head sticking out of a vest pocket is exactly the picture that advice is about.

The fix is simple: carry the pair in a decoy bag and wear hunter orange on the walk. Two bags in our registry are built for it. The Grind Turkey Decoy Bag fits up to three standard decoys and includes a hunter orange safety flag, per The Grind. Higdon's X-Slot Universal Turkey Bag holds up to six full-body decoys in padded slots, but it's camo, so add the orange yourself.

Smaller than a real turkey, on purpose: the Primos and H.S. Strut pairs

Primos made the Lil' Gobbstopper pair smaller than life on purpose, so it reads as a pair of birds a gobbler can push around. Scheels lists a “lightweight, collapsible design,” and Blain's Farm & Fleet lists a two-piece stake system. Primos backs all its products with a one-year warranty against defects for the original purchaser. That's the only published warranty among these five pairs, and it's what breaks the tie with the Strut-Lite. The catch: Primos's own site showed the pair sold out, as a pre-order item, on 2026-09-22, though Amazon still had a listing that day.

The H.S. Strut Strut-Lite combo from Hunter's Specialties is the plainest pair here: a foldable, hollow-body jake and hen with a flake-resistant paint job and a two-piece ground stake for each, per Sportsman's Warehouse. We couldn't read the maker's own site, and listings disagree about the hen: Sportsman's Warehouse says upright, and the Amazon listing title says feeding. Sportsman's Warehouse also had it marked clearance on 2026-09-22, so check that it's still listed, and look at the photos so you know which hen you're getting.

Hard-body pairs: a breeding scene and a jake that moves

Higdon's Jake and Jill pairs a laydown hen with a quarter-strut jake, both one-piece hard bodies with Higdon's XHD Hyper Feathering. Higdon lists the hen at 23.625 in beak to tail and the jake at 28.5 in. Hard bodies score 8 on durability, the best on this page, but they don't fold, so they score 4 on packability. Higdon's page lists the two decoys and a bag, and no stake, which costs it on setup speed. If you don't already own decoy stakes, sort that out before opening morning. Higdon's site showed the pair “Back in Stock Soon” on 2026-09-22.

Dave Smith Decoys' Mating Motion Pair is the only pair here that moves. Pull the hand-operated jerk cord and the jake, mounted on the hen, gyrates. There are no batteries and no motor. DSD's rigid A.C.E. 2.0 bodies hold their shape without inflation and, DSD says, can withstand an accidental shotgun blast or broadhead with only minimal damage. A jake stake and two shoulder-strap bags come in the box. The costs: 8 lb for the pair, a cord to run back to your seat, and a premium price. It ties the Jake and Jill at 5.7 and ranks behind it on durability, a flexible 7 to Higdon's hard-body 8. Two other ways to a pair

If you already own a hen, you don't need a combo. You need a jake. The Avian-X LCD Half-Strut Jake scores 7.3 on the same decoy rubric, collapses, and comes with its beard pre-attached and a collapsible stake and bag in the box. It's on our single-decoy list, linked above.

None of these pairs is sold as a budget decoy, and we don't print prices, which change daily. Do you need a pair in your first season?

Not to get started. One hen is the lower-risk setup and the simpler one to learn. A pair earns its place once you're hunting ground where you know who else is out. Buy it for the ground you hunt.

Poses that change with the season

Only the Purrfect Pair changes its scene: three hen poses and two jake poses, per Montana. The Higdon (laydown hen and quarter-strut jake) and the DSD (a jake mounted on a hen) are fixed scenes, and the Primos and H.S. Strut listings name no alternate poses. Count the stakes and the bags

What's in the box varies more than you'd think. The Purrfect Pair comes with a leg pole for each decoy and no bag. The Primos and H.S. Strut pairs list two-piece stakes and no bag. The Higdon Jake and Jill lists a bag and no stake. The DSD Mating Motion Pair lists a jake stake and a bag for each decoy. Whatever you buy, add a bag if one isn't included.
