ALPS OutdoorZ Impact vs Traditions Turkey Vest: Which One Fits Your First Season?

The Impact and the Traditions are both in ALPS OutdoorZ's current turkey lineup, and both carry a seat, so they often land on the same shortlist in the vests and gear section. They solve different problems, though, and the right one depends on the calls you carry and the size you wear.

The verdict

We haven't bought, worn or hunted in either vest. Every figure here comes from ALPS's own product pages, which list both vests as in stock, and each value in the table links to its source. The scores follow the vest rubric on our methodology page: seat and back support, call and shell storage, weight, quiet materials and size range. The seat: a flip-down seat with a back, or thick foam

The ALPS Impact is what ALPS calls a “sit-anywhere, lightweight design.” Its removable seat “conveniently folds away or completely detaches,” and it comes with a backrest. On the Standard size the seat is 17.5 x 15.5 in and the backrest 20.5 x 17.5 in; on the Small, the seat is 15 x 12 in and the backrest 17 x 15 in. A magnet on the Standard holds the seat up while you walk. ALPS says the design gives you “all the convenience of a metal-frame vest while remaining lightweight,” but it doesn't describe the seat or backrest as padded or framed.

The ALPS Traditions is a strap-style vest, which ALPS describes as “vintage.” Its removable seat is 3 in thick memory foam that ALPS says “delivers reliable support during long sits.” There is no backrest: the back panel is described as “lightweight, breathable,” so the tree behind you does the work.

On our rubric both score 6 for seat and back support, because neither maker describes a padded or framed back. The practical difference is where you can sit. If you always pick a tree, and you should when you can, the Traditions' thick foam is plenty. If you want some back support on a morning when the only cover is a brushy fence line, the Impact's backrest is the reason to choose it.

Call storage: the Impact has a slot for every call

This is the widest gap between the two. The Impact lists a silent box call pocket, a slate call pocket that holds two slate calls and three strikers, three diaphragm call pockets, five shotgun shell loops, a pocket for decoy stakes inside the game bag, and a removable front pocket with its own shoulder strap for stripped-down run-and-gun hunts. That's 7 named pockets plus the shell loops, and it scores 7 for storage.

The Traditions lists two pot call pockets, oversized front pockets, oversized mesh pockets behind the front panels and two mesh water bottle pockets. ALPS gives no count and names no box call, striker or mouth call pocket, so it scores 4. Its big strength is the back: an XL game bag that ALPS says “holds a mature tom or full-body decoys.”

Why it matters for a beginner: a box call is one of the easiest calls to learn first, and it makes sound whenever the lid moves. A dedicated pocket that holds it still, which ALPS calls silent, keeps it quiet on the walk in and puts it in the same place every time you reach for it. Weight: 1 lb 5 oz apart

ALPS lists the Traditions at 2 lb 6 oz and the Impact at 3 lb 11 oz in the Standard size (2 lb 14 oz in the Small). Whether the Impact's backrest and extra pockets are worth 1 lb 5 oz depends on how far you walk. On our weight band that is an 8 for the Traditions and a 7 for the Standard Impact. Either one is light next to a kickstand vest: ALPS lists its Grand Slam at 7 lb 2 oz with the frame fitted.

Fit and sizes: the Traditions publishes a range, the Impact doesn't

The Traditions is one adjustable size with a waist that runs from 40 to 61 in and shoulder straps that extend from 13 to 24 in. That upper end covers big hunters. The lower end is worth checking too: if your waist is under 40 in, the published range suggests the belt may not cinch down far enough.

The Impact comes in Small, which ALPS calls “ideal for youth and smaller frames,” and Standard, and ALPS says it is “easily adjustable to accommodate a variety of sizes.” It publishes no chest or waist range and no XL. If you wear XL or bigger, the Impact is a gamble on published information; the Traditions isn't. For a young or small-framed hunter, the Impact Small is the only one of the two made for you. Noise, patterns and warranty

Neither page names the shell fabric or makes a noise claim, so both score low on quiet materials. The Impact gets one extra point for the magnet that holds its seat up, a closure ALPS includes on the Standard size.

Patterns differ: the Impact comes in Mossy Oak Obsession (Small and Standard) and Mossy Oak New Bottomland (Standard); the Traditions in Mossy Oak Greenleaf and Mossy Oak Original Bottomland. The warranty is identical. ALPS warrants both against defects in materials or workmanship for the life of the product, at ALPS Brands' discretion, and asks for proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. Keep your receipt whichever you buy.

What about the Impact Pro?

ALPS also sells an Impact Pro. It swaps the plain seat for a 1 in molded foam flip-down seat on dual aluminum stays, adds molded front pockets with MOLLE webbing, and includes a removable box call pocket and a removable ThermaCELL pocket. ALPS lists it at 5 lb, one size only. It scores 6.3, the same as the Impact: a better seat and back, but 1 lb 5 oz more to carry and no published fit range. Buy the ALPS Impact if

• You're starting on a box call and want a silent pocket for it, plus slots for pot calls, strikers and mouth calls.
• You want a backrest for setups where there's no good tree.
• You're buying for a youth hunter or you have a smaller frame: the Small is 2 lb 14 oz.
• You like the option of a removable front pocket for short, light run-and-gun hunts.

Buy the ALPS Traditions if

• You want the lightest vest of the two: 2 lb 6 oz.
• Your waist is 40 in or more, and you want a published fit range up to 61 in.
• You carry pot calls and a mouth call, not a box call.
• You sit against trees and want a thick 3 in memory foam seat.
• You want a big game bag for full-body decoys.

Consider neither if
