Best turkey hunting vests for a first season, and which style fits how you hunt

How we picked

We haven't worn, carried or hunted with any of these vests. We read each maker's page (and, for the Tenzing and Primos vests, a named dealer's spec copy) on 2026-09-22 and scored every vest on the rubric in our published First-Season Score: seat and back support 25%, call and shell storage 25%, weight 20%, quiet materials 15%, size range 15%. The eight are ranked by that score. The Traditions and the Will Primos tie at 5.8, and the Traditions ranks ahead because ALPS publishes its weight and a lifetime warranty.

A turkey vest is three things at once: a seat, a call organizer and a small pack. The vests and gear hub explains how it fits with the rest of your first-season kit. On this page, the question is which vest matches the way you'll hunt.

The eight vests, side by side

Every value links to its source. A dash means the maker doesn't publish it, and where a maker names pockets without a total, the count is the pockets it names.

Why the Super Elite 4.0 wins

A typical first-season call kit is a box call, a pot call with a striker or two, and a couple of mouth calls to practice on. Which to learn first is in our beginner call picks. The Super Elite 4.0 has a named home for every one of those. ALPS lists 22 pockets in total, including two large slate call pockets with padded dividers, three striker pockets, a “protective and silent” box call pocket, two mesh diaphragm call pockets and a cell phone chest pocket.

It's also the only vest here with a fabric noise claim: ALPS builds it with a quiet cotton liner and mesh panels. It weighs 3 lb 1 oz in Medium/Large and 3 lb 5 oz in X-Large/XX-Large, with published chest ranges of 38 to 44 in and 44 to 52 in, and ALPS covers defects for the life of the product.

Its weak spot is the seat. The 2.5 in cushion keeps you off wet ground, but there's no backrest and no kickstand, so the tree is your back support. That's where you should be sitting anyway: Vermont Fish & Wildlife's turkey hunting safety tips say to “always sit with your back against a tree trunk, big log or a boulder that is wider than your body,” because it “protects you from being accidentally struck by pellets fired from behind you.” It also stops at XX-Large, a 52 in chest.

The big choice: sit all morning or keep moving

Turkey vests split into two families, and the weights show it. Seat vests with a frame hold you up without a tree: the ALPS Grand Slam weighs 7 lb 2 oz with its kickstand frame fitted (4 lb 10 oz without, Standard size), and the Tenzing TR18 5 lb 4 oz on the dealer spec table. Strap and run-and-gun vests sit on a cushion and lean on a tree: the Knight & Hale Run N' Gun 200 at 1.5 lb, the Traditions at 2 lb 6 oz, the Super Elite at 3 lb 1 oz and the Impact at 3 lb 11 oz. Avian-X and Primos don't publish weights for the Ridge Runner or the Will Primos vest.

The Grand Slam (7.1) and TR18 (7.0) are within 0.1 of each other. The TR18 is 1 lb 14 oz lighter and lists more storage (10 compartments and 5 organization pockets), with spring-loaded aluminum legs and a padded backrest. The Grand Slam has maker-published sizes to a 58 in waist, a frame that comes off, and swivel feet ALPS says “prevent sinking.” We put the two side by side in Tenzing TR18 vs ALPS Grand Slam.

Run-and-gun vests

Run-and-gun means walking and calling until a gobbler answers, then setting up fast against the nearest good tree, so the vest has to be light and the seat has to get out of the way. The Knight & Hale Run N' Gun 200 is the lightest vest in our registry at 1.5 lb. It has a 10-point adjustment system that Knight & Hale says fits “man, woman, or child,” a removable six-layer cushioned seat that cinches out of the way, a box call pocket, two pot call pockets, diaphragm pockets and striker slots, plus a 198 cu in bladder-compatible backpack and a decoy sling. The trade-offs: a cushion with no padded back, no published fabric, and a one-year warranty.

The Avian-X Ridge Runner is a backpack-style vest with a molded 2 in high-density foam seat on magnetic quick-deploy storage, Comfort Plus padding on the back and shoulder straps, and EVA-molded pockets for a box call and striker and for a pot call and diaphragms. It comes in Small/Large and X-Large/3XL. Avian-X publishes no weight and no warranty term, which costs it points, and it names 7 pockets.

If you move a lot, a light panel blind is another way to hide your lap without a heavy seat. Ameristep says its 2 lb Throwdown “easily stows in your turkey vest”; it's ranked with the enclosed blinds in our best turkey hunting blinds.

Fit: sizes, youth and big frames

A vest that rides wrong is a vest you'll leave in the truck, so check the fit numbers before the pocket count. Here is what each maker publishes:

• ALPS Super Elite 4.0: Medium/Large (chest 38 to 44 in) and X-Large/XX-Large (chest 44 to 52 in).
• ALPS Grand Slam: Standard (waist up to 48 in) and X-Large (waist 48 to 58 in).
• ALPS Traditions: one adjustable size, waist 40 to 61 in, shoulder straps 13 to 24 in.
• Avian-X Ridge Runner: Small/Large and X-Large/3XL.
• Primos Will Primos vest: Medium, Large, X-Large and 3X-Large on Primos's store.
• ALPS Impact: Small, which ALPS calls “ideal for youth and smaller frames,” and Standard, with no measurements.
• Knight & Hale Run N' Gun 200: one fit with a 10-point adjustment system, no range published.
• Tenzing TR18: no sizes published in the dealer spec tables.

For a young hunter, the Impact in Small weighs 2 lb 14 oz and still has a flip-down seat with a backrest, and the vests that fit a smaller frame are ranked in best youth turkey vests. For a big frame, the Ridge Runner and the Will Primos vest both reach 3XL, the Grand Slam's X-Large fits a 58 in waist, and the Traditions adjusts to a 61 in waist.

Two light ALPS vests: Impact vs Traditions

These two cover the light end of the ALPS line in different ways. The Impact (3 lb 11 oz, Standard) gets you a flip-down seat and backrest that fold away or detach, a silent box call pocket, a slate pocket that holds two pot calls and three strikers, three diaphragm pockets, and a removable front pocket with its own shoulder strap for stripped-down hunts.

The Traditions (2 lb 6 oz) is a classic strap vest with a removable 3 in memory foam seat, two pot call pockets and general-purpose front and mesh pockets, but no box call, striker or diaphragm pocket listed. It's the simplest build on this page, no frame and no molded pockets, which makes it the budget-minded place to start; compare current prices with the buttons. Noise and warranties

Only two makers here say anything about the fabric: ALPS's quiet cotton liner on the Super Elite 4.0 and Primos's lightweight polyester on the Will Primos vest. The rest publish closures and pockets instead. ALPS calls the box call pockets on the Super Elite 4.0, Grand Slam and Impact silent. Avian-X says its EVA-molded box call pocket keeps calls quiet and protected and its magnetic seat storage gives “secure, silent seat retention.” Primos puts magnet closures on both striker pockets and the seat pad, and the Impact's Standard size has a magnet that holds the seat up while you walk.

Warranties range widely. ALPS covers all its vests against defects in materials or workmanship for the life of the product, and its warranty page asks for proof of purchase from an authorized dealer, so check the seller and keep the receipt. Tenzing's homepage states a Limited Lifetime Warranty for its packs. Knight & Hale and Primos give one year. Avian-X publishes no term on the Ridge Runner's page.

Start with where you'll sit

If you'll sit against trees, a cushion vest like the Super Elite 4.0 or the Traditions is enough, and lighter. If you often hunt field edges, open timber or places with no tree wider than your body, a frame vest like the Grand Slam or TR18 gives you a backrest anywhere. Count the calls you'll carry, not the pockets

Twenty-two pockets are only useful if the right ones exist. Check for a box call pocket if you run a box call (the Traditions has none), striker slots if you run a pot call, and a mouth-call pocket that keeps diaphragms clean. None of these makers publishes pocket dimensions, so if you already own a long box call from our box call picks, check the vest's listing photos before you buy.

Weigh it with the seat on

A vest's listed weight is empty. Calls, water, a decoy and a thermos come on top. Start from the lightest vest that does what you need: 1.5 lb for the Run N' Gun 200 is a very different morning from 7 lb 2 oz for the Grand Slam with its frame.

Fit it over what you'll wear

The first-season mistake: buying the biggest vest

More pockets and a frame look like more help. Loaded up, they're more weight on every walk and more places to lose a striker. Buy for the hunts you'll do this spring. If you find yourself wishing for a kickstand by May, a frame vest will still be there next season.
