Avian-X Ridge Runner turkey vest review: molded call pockets, missing numbers

The Ridge Runner gets the two details most vests get wrong - molded pockets for a box call and a pot call, and a seat that deploys silently. Then Avian-X declines to publish a weight, a fabric or a warranty. It scores 6.5 of 10.

The molded call pockets

Start with what the Ridge Runner gets right, because it is specific and it matters more than the pocket count suggests.

Avian-X names an EVA-molded box call and striker pocket and a separate EVA-molded pot call and diaphragm pocket, and says the molding keeps calls quiet and protected. Molded means the pocket holds its shape rather than collapsing around the call, so a box call sits flat and does not drag against shells, and a pot call does not take a striker tip through its playing surface.

That solves two real problems. The first is noise: a box call rattling on the walk in is one of the classic ways to empty a ridge before daylight, which is why the NWTF's own call-care advice includes using a koozie as a call protector. The second is the playing surface: a pot call rubbing against grit in a general-purpose pocket is a pot call that needs conditioning, and the routine for that is in how to condition a slate call.

Beyond those two, Avian-X names a zippered chest pocket and four zippered internal pockets, plus hydration compatibility. Seven named pockets, no total published. Our rubric scores call and shell storage at 25% and gives the Ridge Runner 7 of 10: credit for the molded, turkey-specific pockets, a deduction for the count against vests that carry far more.

A 2 in foam seat on magnets

The seat is a molded 2 in high-density foam pad with adjustable seat bungees, held in magnetic quick-deploy storage that Avian-X describes as giving secure, silent seat retention. The back and shoulder straps carry what Avian-X calls Comfort Plus padding.

Two inches of published foam thickness is a useful number — most vest makers describe a seat as “padded” and leave it there — and magnetic deployment is the right call on a vest meant for a hunter who sits down six times a morning. Hook-and-loop is loud and buckles are fiddly in the dark.

Sizes to 3XL, in two sizes

The Ridge Runner comes in Small/Large and X-Large/3XL, and that second size is the quiet reason this vest is worth a look. Most turkey vests are one size with adjusters, and a one-size vest at the top of the range runs out of strap before it runs out of hunter.

Our sizes metric gives it 9 of 10, the best score it earns. If you are shopping because the last vest you tried did not close comfortably, this is the review to read alongside best turkey vests for big guys.

Two sizes is still coarse. Small/Large is a wide band to cover with bungees and adjustable waist and shoulder straps, and a genuinely small-framed hunter may be better served by a vest built for a smaller frame.

The three numbers Avian-X does not publish

This is where the score goes, and it is worth being precise about it rather than vague.

  • No weight. None, anywhere on the product page. Our rubric weights this at 20% and scores an unpublished weight 3 of 10. On a vest explicitly sold for run-and-gun hunting, the refusal to publish a weight is the strangest omission in the category: the whole pitch is mobility. For comparison, ALPS publishes weights across its line, Knight & Hale publishes 1.5 lb for the Run N' Gun 200, and TIDEWE publishes 2.51 lb.
  • No fabric. No material, no denier, no noise claim. Our quiet-materials metric scores it 5 of 10 — a deduction for the silence, a point back for the magnetic seat retention Avian-X does describe as silent. Fabric noise at close range decides turkey hunts, and this is the one claim a maker can make cheaply and does not.
  • No warranty terms. Nothing published on the product page. ALPS, by contrast, publishes coverage against defects in materials or workmanship for the life of the product at its discretion.

None of that means the vest is poorly made. It means we cannot verify it, and this site ranks on published evidence rather than on vibes — the rubric and the bands are on our methodology page. A maker that publishes more wins points for publishing more.

The Ridge Runner against three rivals

Three useful comparisons: the ALPS vest closest to its intent, our top-ranked vest, and the lightest seat vest in the registry. Every figure here is the maker's own, linked to the page it came from.

The Ridge Runner against the ALPS Impact Pro, which scores 6.3: ALPS publishes a weight and offers a backrest, Avian-X offers molded call pockets and 3XL.
Our top-ranked vest at 7.8, with 22 named pockets, and the 1.5 lb Run N' Gun 200 with ten adjustment points - the two directions you can go from here.

Read it this way. Against the Impact Pro, the question is whether molded call pockets and 3XL beat a published weight and a backrest. Against the Super Elite 4.0, you are paying more and carrying more for far greater storage. Against the Run N' Gun 200, you are choosing molded pockets and bigger sizing over a published 1.5 lb and ten adjustment points.

Who should buy it, and who should not

Buy the Ridge Runner if: you need X-Large to 3XL; you carry a box call and a pot call and are tired of them rattling together; you sit against trees rather than in open fields; and you are comfortable buying a backpack vest without knowing its weight.

Buy something else if: weight is your deciding factor, in which case buy from a maker that publishes one; you want a backrest or kickstand for open ground; you carry a large call collection and want double-digit pockets; or a published warranty matters to you.

As with every review on this site: we do not test vests. Each figure above was read on Avian-X's own product page and links back to it, and scored against the same rubric as every other vest here. That makes the comparison fair; it does not tell you how the straps feel in hour four. Buy where you can return it and spend an evening sitting on the ground with it loaded.

How we picked this

Scored on the specs that decide your season

Every pick is read off the maker's own specs, materials and instructions, then scored on a public rubric built around a first-season hunter: the sounds a call is made to produce and how it holds up in rain, a choke's load ratings and thread chart, the weights, pockets and seat heights you carry all morning. Each figure links straight to the page it came from, so you can check any pick in one click.

Scores come from that documented research with fixed bands, and prices come live from Amazon with the date they were checked. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.
