Best turkey vests for big guys, ranked by the sizes makers actually publish

How we ranked these

We have not worn or hunted in any of these vests. Every figure below comes from the maker's page (or, for the Tenzing and Primos vests, a named dealer's spec copy) and links to it.

On this page the ranking rule is different from our main turkey vest roundup, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. A vest that scores 7.8 overall is no use to you if its largest size stops at a 52 in chest. So these five are ranked by how far the maker's published sizing goes for a bigger hunter, and the First-Season Score only breaks ties:

1. Vests a maker lists to 3XL. The Avian-X Ridge Runner (X-Large/3XL) and the Primos Will Primos vest (Medium to 3X-Large). Ridge Runner ranks first on score, 6.5 to 5.8.
2. Vests with a published body measurement, ranked by that measurement. ALPS Traditions (waist 40 to 61 in), then the ALPS Grand Slam X-Large (waist 48 to 58 in).
3. Then everything else. The ALPS Super Elite 4.0 is the highest-scoring turkey vest in our registry at 7.8, and it is fifth here, because its biggest size fits a 52 in chest.

The five, side by side

Sizes come first in this table for a reason. A dash means the maker does not publish that figure, which on this page includes both 3XL vests' weights.

Why the Ridge Runner leads

The Avian-X Ridge Runner is the only vest here that combines a size run a big hunter can order with call storage built for the job. Avian-X sells it in two sizes, Small/Large and X-Large/3XL, and lists EVA-molded pockets for a box call and striker and for a pot call and diaphragms, a molded 2 in high-density foam seat on magnetic quick-deploy storage, and Comfort Plus padding on the back and shoulder straps.

Its weaknesses are published gaps rather than design faults: Avian-X lists no weight, no fabric and no warranty term, and names 7 pockets where ALPS names 22 on the Super Elite 4.0. That is what holds its score to 6.5.

The Primos Will Primos vest is the other 3XL option and the simpler product: a lightweight polyester strap vest with a removable 3 in seat pad on a magnet closure, two magnet-closure striker pockets, lanyard D-rings and textured shoulder straps Primos says grip a gun sling. Primos publishes no weight and no pocket count, and the warranty is one year.

Measure yourself the way the maker does

The three makers here measure three different things, so a tape measure saves you a return:

• ALPS Super Elite 4.0: chest. Medium/Large fits a 38 to 44 in chest, X-Large/XX-Large a 44 to 52 in chest.
• ALPS Grand Slam and Traditions: waist. Grand Slam Standard fits a waist up to 48 in and X-Large 48 to 58 in; the Traditions is one adjustable size, waist 40 to 61 in, with shoulder straps that extend 13 to 24 in.
• Avian-X and Primos: a size label only. X-Large/3XL and Medium to 3X-Large, with no inches attached.

Measure over the layers you will actually wear on a cold opening morning, not over a T-shirt. What those layers should be is in what to wear turkey hunting. If you are between sizes, the vest with a published range is the safer buy, because you can check the number instead of trusting a letter.

“3XL” means nothing on its own

There is no industry standard behind a turkey vest size label, and the evidence for that is on this page: the ALPS Traditions is sold as one adjustable size and fits a bigger waist (61 in) than the Grand Slam's X-Large (58 in), while Avian-X's 3XL comes with no measurement at all. Two vests that both say 3XL can be inches apart.

What to do about it: prefer a published measurement over a label, check the adjustment range (straps, waist buckles, side compression), and read the return policy before you order. Where a maker publishes nothing, treat the size label as the seller's guess and buy from somewhere you can send it back.

The seat is the other size problem

Fit is not only the shell. A seat rated for your weight matters more on a bigger frame, and most vests do not publish a rating at all — none of the five here does. Two separate seats in our registry do publish one, and that is worth knowing if a vest cushion is not enough:

• The Barronett Aluminum XL Blind Chair is rated for 400 lb on a 4 lb aluminum frame, with a padded 22 x 20 in seat, though its 18 in seat height is set for a blind rather than a tree.
• The ALPS OutdoorZ Rhino MC is rated for 375 lb at 5 lb 6 oz with a 20 x 18 in padded seat.

Both are ranked in our turkey chair picks. If you want back support without carrying a chair, the Grand Slam's removable kickstand frame is the vest answer, and its X-Large is cut for a 48 to 58 in waist. Be honest with yourself about the weight: ALPS lists it at 7 lb 2 oz with the frame fitted, 4 lb 10 oz without. The frame vests are compared in best turkey vests with seats.

Strap vests and adjustment range

For a bigger hunter, an adjustable strap vest is often a better bet than a sized one, because the adjustment does the work. The ALPS Traditions is the clearest example: one size, waist 40 to 61 in, shoulder straps 13 to 24 in, a removable 3 in memory foam seat, 2 lb 6 oz, and ALPS's lifetime defect warranty.

The trade-off is storage. ALPS lists two pot call pockets and general-purpose front and mesh pockets on the Traditions, and no box call pocket, striker holder or diaphragm pocket. What is not on this list, and why

Three vests in our registry are not ranked here. The ALPS Impact tops out at Standard with no measurements and no XL, so it belongs on our youth vest page instead. The ALPS Impact Pro is one size with no published range. The Tenzing TR18 publishes no sizes at all in the dealer spec tables we could read, which is a strange gap on a 5 lb 4 oz recliner vest — if you are big and want that vest, try it on in a store.

Buyer's guide: buying a turkey vest at 2XL and up

Start with the tape, not the tile

Chest and waist, over your opening-morning layers. Then look only at vests whose published range covers you. That single step removes most of the market and all of the guesswork.

Adjustment beats sizing

A one-size vest with a 21 in waist adjustment range (the Traditions) can fit more bodies than a two-size vest with no measurements. Check the strap and buckle range before the size label.

Count the pockets you will use

A big frame does not need more pockets, but it does need the right ones: a box call pocket if you run a box, striker slots if you run a pot call, and a mouth-call pocket that keeps diaphragms clean. The Ridge Runner molds the first two; the Traditions has neither.

Add the seat you actually need

If the vest cushion will not do, a rated chair is a separate purchase — and a published weight rating is worth paying for. Only two seats in our registry publish one, at 400 lb and 375 lb.

Then buy where you can return it

With two of these five publishing nothing but a size letter, the return policy is part of the purchase. Order early enough in the winter that a swap still arrives before the opener.
