The best turkey vests for women, and the one that is actually cut for a woman

We have not worn any of these vests. Every pick earned its place on published specifications — the maker's own fit, seat, storage, weight and warranty information — scored against the vest rubric in our published First-Season Score: seat and back support 25%, call and shell storage 25%, weight 20%, quiet materials 15%, size range 15%. For this page specifically we added one filter before the rubric: the maker has to publish something real about fit. A vest that is “one size fits most” with no adjustment count and no size range does not get ranked here, because fit is the entire question being asked.

The honest state of this market

There is not much of one. We went looking for women's turkey vests across the makers this site already tracks and found exactly one company publishing a women's-specific turkey vest: DSG Outerwear, which says its vest was “created just for women.” ALPS OutdoorZ's turkey category lists seven vests and none of them is described as a women's model. Nomad sells its turkey vests under a men's heading. Knight & Hale, Primos, Tenzing and Avian-X all sell unisex vests.

So the real question for most women buying a first turkey vest is not “which women's vest” but “which unisex vest adjusts small enough to work.” That is the question the rest of this page answers, and the specification that decides it is the adjustment count, not the camo.

The four, side by side

Every value links to the maker page it came from. A dash means the maker does not publish that figure, and the score treats it as missing rather than assuming the best.

Why the DSG Outerwear vest ranks first

Because it is the only one designed around the problem. DSG's product page describes a vest “created just for women” with “adjustable padded shoulder straps and stomach straps” for a custom fit, in one size DSG says fits XS through XL, in 100% polyester, with a fully removable padded seat.

The storage is not a compromise either, which is the usual catch with a women's version of anything. DSG lists six shotgun shell holders, two individual slate call pockets, a box call holder, a mesh dual mouth call holder, two large pockets with magnetic closure, two large pockets with a mesh divider and zip closure, two inside mesh pockets with hook-and-loop closure, and a large decoy and game pouch at the back. That is a proper turkey layout: a dedicated home for each call type, plus a bag for the bird.

The honest catches: DSG publishes no weight and no warranty terms, and there is one camo pattern. It is also a sit-against-a-tree vest — a cushion, not a chair.

What actually goes wrong with a men's vest on a woman

This is worth being specific about, because “it does not fit” hides four separate problems and only some of them are fixable with straps.

• The shoulder straps sit too far apart. A men's yoke is cut wider. On narrower shoulders the straps slide outward, which drags the whole vest sideways when you turn your upper body to shoot.
• The vest is too long in the torso. The seat then hangs behind your knees rather than under you, and the shell loops end up somewhere you cannot reach sitting down.
• Bagginess at the chest. Excess fabric in front of you is the thing that catches a gun stock at exactly the wrong moment. A reviewer at Women's Outdoor News, writing up a men's Primos signature vest from a woman's point of view, is a useful read on precisely this class of problem.
• Call pockets you cannot reach. If the vest rides low, the slate and striker pockets sit below your natural hand position, which is a slow, noisy reach at the worst moment.

Straps fix the first and, partly, the third. They do not fix torso length. That is why a women's pattern or a genuinely small size beats a heavily adjusted large every time.

Adjustment points are the specification to read

If you are buying a unisex vest, the number to look for is how many places it adjusts. Two vests here publish it, and the difference is large.

Ten adjustment points on a 1.5 lb vest, as on the Knight & Hale, is a lot of ability to pull a vest in until it stops moving independently of you. Four points, as on the TIDEWE, is enough for most people and less than the Knight & Hale gives you. Seat and back support: what to prioritise

Only one pick here has a backrest: ALPS publishes the Impact as a sit-anywhere vest with a flip-down seat and backrest, with the Standard-size seat at 17.5 by 15.5 in and the backrest at 20.5 by 17.5 in. Everything else on this page is a cushion.

That matters for anybody sitting still for four hours, and it matters more if you are shorter, because a tree that supports a six-foot hunter's shoulders may catch you across the back of the head. Weight matters more on a smaller frame, not less

A 7 lb vest is a different proposition at 130 lb of body weight than at 220 lb. The published weights here run from 1.5 lb (Knight & Hale) through 2.51 lb (TIDEWE) to 3 lb 11 oz (ALPS Impact, Standard). For comparison, the ALPS Grand Slam with its kickstand frame fitted is 7 lb 2 oz.

Why a youth vest is usually not the answer

It is the obvious workaround and it mostly does not work. Youth turkey vests are cut for a shorter torso and a smaller chest, and they scale down the storage and the seat with everything else — smaller cushion, fewer call pockets, sometimes no game bag. An adult woman who fits a youth vest across the shoulders will usually find the seat too small and the pockets too few.

Buyer's guide: fitting a turkey vest properly

A turkey vest has one job that no other hunting garment has: it has to work while you are seated on the ground, leaning back, with a shotgun on your knee, without making a sound when you move. Judge it in that position, not standing in front of a mirror.

Four checks, in this order:

1. Sit down in it. The seat should be under you, not behind you. If the vest is too long in the torso, the cushion ends up out of position and nothing else about the vest can fix that.
2. Reach for the slate pocket while seated. Your hand should find it without leaning or looking. If it is below your natural reach, the vest is riding too low.
3. Mount the gun. There should be no fabric bunched where the stock comes into your shoulder. This is the single most common complaint about a men's vest on a woman's frame, and it is a safety issue as much as a comfort one.
4. Turn your upper body left and right. The vest should turn with you. If it stays put while you rotate, pull the straps in — and if it still does, it is too big.

On money: the DSG vest at $99.98 and the TIDEWE at $69.99 both sit under a hundred dollars at list, which means a women's-pattern vest is not a premium purchase.
