Turkey Calls · The rankings

The best turkey calls for kids, and why it is never a mouth call

A child's first turkey call has to work in one small hand, on the first try, with nothing to maintain. Five calls ranked on exactly that, and the one thing to let a kid do on the hunt.

How we picked

Five calls scored on the call rubric published with our First-Season Score — beginner learning curve 30%, sound range 20%, weather tolerance 20%, build and materials 15%, carry and vest noise 15%. For a child, that first weight is doing most of the work, which is why four of the five picks are push-button or push/pull calls. Every material, sound list, feature and warranty term below was read on the maker's own page and links back to it.

We have not put these calls in a child's hands, so nothing here claims a particular kid learned a particular call in a particular week. What we can do honestly is rank them on how much they ask of the person holding them.

Why not a mouth call

A diaphragm call is the cheapest call on the shelf and it is the wrong first call for almost any child, for three reasons.

  • It takes weeks, not minutes. A mouth call is an instrument you learn with your tongue and your diaphragm, and the first hundred attempts sound nothing like a turkey. A kid who cannot make a sound on day one usually stops trying.
  • Fit is a real problem. Diaphragms are sized for an adult palate. A call that will not seat properly will not work no matter how good the technique is.
  • It is a small object that goes in the mouth. For younger children that is a supervision question you do not need on top of everything else a first hunt involves.

None of that means never. A twelve-year-old who is genuinely keen will get there, and best mouth calls for beginners plus how to use a mouth call are the route when they ask. Start with a call that rewards them on the first afternoon.

The five calls, side by side

Every value links to the page it came from. “Not published” means the maker does not print that figure, and the score treats it as missing rather than assuming it.

Picks one to three. Only Quaker Boy's H2O publishes a waterproof claim and a no-chalk claim, which together remove every upkeep job a kid would have to remember.
Picks four and five: the classic push-button, and the one box call forgiving enough to hand a child.

Why the H2O Easy Yelper wins

The H2O Easy Yelper scores 7.9 and it wins on removals rather than features. There is no chalk to apply, because Quaker Boy says it requires none. There is no second hand needed, because it is a one-handed push-button. There is no rain worry, because Quaker Boy calls it waterproof and says the coating lets it work “in the heaviest rain storms.” And there is nothing fragile, because it is built from mahogany sides, a maple striker, a birch dowel and a stainless steel spring.

What it gives up is range. A push-button is a one-voice call, so it loses most of the sound-range score, and a kid who sticks with turkey hunting will outgrow it. That is the right trade for a first call, and it is the same logic that puts the push-buttons near the top of best push button turkey calls.

Behind those two, H.S. Strut's Push Button Yelper at 7.3 is the small-hands pick: a hand-tuned walnut-and-poplar call H.S. Strut sells for soft clucks, purrs and tree talk — the quiet sounds that matter most when a bird is already close. The standard Easy Yelper at 6.9 is the H2O without the waterproof coating and is the cheapest way in. And Primos's Hook Up at 6.6 is the one box call we would hand a child, because a magnet holds the paddle at the right angle for them — Primos says it “holds the paddle at the perfect angle” — and the paddle comes off entirely for silent carry.

One hand, one motion, no chalk

Those three phrases are the whole specification for a child's turkey call, and they are worth saying plainly because almost every “best turkey call” list optimizes for something else.

One hand matters because the other hand is holding a shotgun, or a sandwich, or nothing at all because the kid is eight. A box call needs two hands and a stable lap; a push-button needs a thumb.

One motion matters because a push and a release is a complete calling sequence. There is no angle to maintain, no stroke to even out, no wrist to keep steady. The HD Cutter's published stroke lengths are the natural next step from that, not a different skill.

No chalk matters because chalk is the maintenance job every new hunter forgets, and a chalkless call cannot be ruined by forgetting it. The upkeep a traditional box call needs is laid out in box call chalk and care, and it is a reasonable job for an adult and an unreasonable one for a nine-year-old.

What to let a kid actually do

Here is the part that decides whether they come back next spring. Give the kid the calling. Not all of it, and not at the critical moment, but the locator work at daylight and the soft stuff between birds. A child who called a turkey in has a story; a child who sat still for four hours while an adult called has a nap.

The rest of the kit for a young hunter is covered in best youth turkey vests and best youth turkey shotguns.

Teaching the call itself takes about ten minutes. How to use a push-button turkey call has the stroke lengths and a two-minute kitchen-table drill that works as well for a child as for an adult.

Buyer's guide: a kid's first turkey call

Buy a push-button first, almost always

One hand, one motion, instant result. A child who makes a hen yelp on the first afternoon stays interested; a child who fails at a mouth call for three weeks does not. The box call and the pot call come later, and the mouth call later still.

Prefer the no-chalk version

The two Quaker Boy calls here differ mainly in that the H2O is waterproof and needs no chalking. That difference is worth the small step up in price, because it removes the one upkeep job a kid will forget and a wet morning will punish.

Buy two cheap calls rather than one good one

A kid will lose one, drop one in a creek, and leave one in the truck. Two inexpensive push-buttons in two pockets is a better plan than a single premium call, and it means there is always one for you and one for them.

Check the youth rules in your state before you shop

Youth season dates, mentor requirements, hunter-education deadlines and minimum ages vary by state and they change. Your state wildlife agency is the only source that binds you, and it is a better first phone call than any gear decision.

The mistake to avoid: making it about the kill

Most first youth hunts do not end with a bird, and that is fine if the morning was theirs. Let them call, let them watch birds through binoculars, let them leave at nine o'clock if they are done. The gear list for a first season, in budget order, is in best turkey hunting gear for beginners.

How we picked this

Scored on the specs that decide your season

Every pick is read off the maker's own specs, materials and instructions, then scored on a public rubric built around a first-season hunter: the sounds a call is made to produce and how it holds up in rain, a choke's load ratings and thread chart, the weights, pockets and seat heights you carry all morning. Each figure links straight to the page it came from, so you can check any pick in one click.

Scores come from that documented research with fixed bands, and prices come live from Amazon with the date they were checked. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.
