How we picked
Seven gifts, every one a real product currently sold, each scored on the rubric for its own category as published with our First-Season Score. Those rubrics measure different things — a vest is scored on its seat and storage, a binocular on its glass and warranty, a striker on function and build — so the scores rank each pick against its own category and not against each other. Every feature, weight and warranty term below was read on the maker's own page and links back to it.
We have also tried to pick gifts that survive the actual test of a hunting present: will they still have it in three seasons. Two of these are things a hunter would not buy themselves, which is usually what makes a gift land.
Why December is the right month to buy turkey gear
Spring turkey season opens somewhere between March and May depending on the state, which puts Christmas roughly four months ahead of the opener. That gap is the gift.
- A call needs practice, not packaging. A box call given in December gets four months of kitchen table practice. The same call given the week before the opener gets none, which is the difference between a tool and a souvenir.
- Vests and chairs need fitting. A vest that does not fit goes back, and December has the return window that April does not.
- Nothing is picked over. Turkey gear sells out in March. In December, the model you actually want is in stock.
The seven gifts, side by side
Every value links to the page it came from. “Not published” means the maker does not print that figure, and the score treats it as missing rather than assuming it.

By what you want to spend
We do not print prices on this site, so here is the honest shape of the list instead, from smallest to largest, with what each one actually does.
Stocking size. WoodHaven's carbon striker is the best small gift in turkey hunting, because a striker is half the instrument. Swap it onto a pot call they already own and the call has a new, higher, raspier hen voice — for the price of a box of shells. The full ranking is in best slate call strikers.
Small but useful. Montana Decoy's Dinner Belle is a folding hen at a published 8 oz including its stake, folding to 9 x 6 in. It is the cheapest way for a hunter to find out whether a decoy helps them at all, and it is light enough that they will actually carry it. Thermacell's hunt pack is the classic would-never-buy-it-themselves gift: mosquitoes in a Southern turkey woods in May are the reason people quit at nine in the morning.
The real present. WoodHaven's Walnut Real Hen box call is a handmade wooden instrument, and a good box call is the one piece of turkey gear that gets handed down. Barronett's Ground Gobbler chair is the right gift for anyone who has mentioned their back after a morning against a tree.
The big one. The ALPS Impact vest is 3 lb 11 oz in the Standard size, with a flip-down seat and backrest, a silent box call pocket, a slate pocket sized for two pot calls and three strikers, three diaphragm pockets and a removable run-and-gun front pocket — and ALPS now sells it in a Small, which makes it one of very few serious vests that fits a youth or a smaller adult. ALPS warrants its products against defects for the life of the product. The alternatives are ranked in best turkey vests.
Leupold's BX-1 McKenzie HD 8x42 sits in the same bracket and is the gift that gets used in every other season too, backed by Leupold's lifetime guarantee. Why 8x42 and not something bigger is explained in best turkey hunting binoculars.
Three things not to buy
If the person you are buying for has never hunted turkeys at all, the better list is gifts for new turkey hunters, which starts from nothing. For the hunter who already owns everything obvious, unique gifts for turkey hunters goes sideways instead of bigger.

Thermacell Fuel-ZoneGuard Extreme Mosquito Repeller Hunt Pack (MR300F)

- 6.0 oz, and Thermacell publishes the active ingredient (21.97% d-cis allethrin) and a 15-foot zone.
- Registering the product doubles the warranty to two years (per Thermacell).
Where it falls short
- Thermacell says to allow 10 to 15 minutes to reach maximum effectiveness, so it is not an instant fix when the gnats find you.
- Thermacell's own guidance says not to expose the appliance or mats to rain, and that it may be less effective on very windy days.
- Fuel cartridges cannot be carried on a passenger aircraft (per Thermacell).

The stocking filler that changes how a call sounds
WoodHaven Custom Calls Carbon Striker
A hollow 1/4 in carbon dowel under a turned maple head: WoodHaven says it "creates raspy, high pitched yelps and crisp cuts" and changes tone with surface and pressure, which is exactly the second voice a one-striker hunter is missing.
Spec sheetEvery row sourced to the maker
How the 7.0 score breaks down
- Documented function (30%)
- 7
- Ease of use (25%)
- 9
- Build (20%)
- 8
- Carry & weight (15%)
- 5
- Warranty (10%)
- 3
What the specs support
- A carbon shaft and a maple head is a different sound from solid wood, so it genuinely adds a voice rather than a spare.
- WoodHaven names the sounds it is built for: raspy, high-pitched yelps and crisp cuts.
- The maker states the tone changes with surface and pressure, so one striker covers a slate and a glass differently.
- WoodHaven lists it in the same mid price band as its Deluxe striker and Ninja Stick, not at flagship money.
Where it falls short
- No published weather claim despite the carbon shaft; the head is still wood.
- No overall length or weight published, so balance is unknowable until it is in your hand.
- No warranty published, only a returns policy.
- A high, raspy voice is not what you want for soft tree talk at first light.
Skip this if…
…you only own one pot call and have not learned a clean yelp on it yet; a striker that rewards pressure changes is a second-season tool.

Buyer's guide: getting a turkey gift right
Buy the thing they would not buy themselves
Hunters buy calls and shells. They do not buy the chair, the bug repeller or the binocular, because those feel like luxuries right up to the morning they are not. That is where a gift does work a hunter would not do for themselves.
Avoid anything that has to fit
Boots, pants and camo tops all have a fit problem and a size-chart problem. Vests are the exception worth taking a chance on, because the good ones adjust widely and ALPS now publishes a Small as well as Standard and 2X sizes.
One good thing beats three cheap things
A bundle of five no-name calls is five things nobody uses. A single handmade box call, or a single striker that changes a call they already love, is a gift with a story attached. How to choose between call types is in best turkey calls for beginners.
Read the warranty, because it is part of the gift
ALPS warrants against defects for the life of the product and Leupold publishes a lifetime guarantee on this binocular. WoodHaven, by contrast, does not accept returns or refunds on products. None of that should stop you buying; all of it is worth knowing before you wrap it.
Give the season, not just the gear
The best gift anyone gave a new turkey hunter was a morning with somebody who knew what they were doing. If you hunt, the gift is the invitation; the vest just makes it comfortable. Everything a first-timer needs to know before that morning is in how to turkey hunt for beginners.
How we picked this
Scored on the specs that decide your season
Every pick is read off the maker's own specs, materials and instructions, then scored on a public rubric built around a first-season hunter: the sounds a call is made to produce and how it holds up in rain, a choke's load ratings and thread chart, the weights, pockets and seat heights you carry all morning. Each figure links straight to the page it came from, so you can check any pick in one click.
Scores come from that documented research with fixed bands, and prices come live from Amazon with the date they were checked. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best Christmas gift for a turkey hunter?
A turkey vest with a seat in it, if your budget reaches. ALPS's Impact is 3 lb 11 oz in the Standard size with a flip-down seat and backrest, a silent box call pocket and a slate pocket sized for two pot calls and three strikers, and it is one of the few serious vests sold in a Small. For a smaller gift, a carbon striker changes the voice of a pot call they already own.
What do you buy a turkey hunter who has everything?
Something that upgrades what they already own rather than duplicating it. A carbon striker gives an existing pot call a second hen voice. A bug repeller fixes the one problem they complain about every May. A low chair fixes their back. All three are things an experienced hunter rarely buys for themselves.
Should I buy turkey calls as a gift?
Yes, with one rule: buy a friction call, not a mouth call, unless you know they already run diaphragms. A box call or a pot call makes a believable hen sound in the first afternoon, and given at Christmas it has four months of practice before the opener. A mouth call takes weeks and has to fit the user's palate.
Is it a good idea to give ammunition as a gift?
Not for turkey hunting. Turkey loads get matched to a particular choke and barrel by shooting patterns on paper, so the right box is a decision the hunter makes with a target rather than a guess you make in a store. There are also legal and shipping restrictions on firearms and ammunition that vary by state.
How early should I buy turkey gear for Christmas?
Buying in December is already early in the right way: the season opens between March and May depending on the state, so a Christmas gift arrives with four months of practice time and a return window. Waiting until March means paying more for whatever is left.
Where do the specs on this page come from?
Weights, features, contents, sizes and warranty terms come from each maker's own product and warranty pages, and every value in the tables links to its source. We do not print prices because this site has no live price feed, and we do not field-test gear, so the rankings come from published specifications scored on our category rubrics.
