The best turkey chokes for a Retay 20 gauge, once you know which thread you have

Nobody here has threaded one of these tubes into a Retay or shot a pattern with it. Retay is a newer name in the US than Mossberg or Remington, and the aftermarket has not caught up. That makes the thread question the whole job on this page: get it right and a 20 gauge Retay is a serious turkey gun, get it wrong and you have bought a tube you cannot return.

Marapro or Crio Plus? Read your own model before you buy

Retay publishes the answer itself. Its FAQ says “Most Retay shotguns use a semi-proprietary Retay Marapro choke pattern,” with thread specifications similar to Benelli Crio Plus but with smaller outer diameters — and adds the detail that matters most: “Marapro chokes will always fit in a Crio Plus barrel,” while the reverse is not guaranteed. Then it splits the line up by model.

So a 20 gauge Gordion bought new in 2022 and one bought new in 2024 do not take the same tube. If you are not certain which side of that line your gun falls on, the one-way compatibility Retay publishes gives you a safe default: a Marapro-pattern tube will go into a Crio Plus barrel, so buying the Retay-threaded tube is the lower-risk purchase of the two.

The tube already in your barrel might be enough

Worth knowing before you spend anything: Retay's FAQ states that “The Retay extended Turkey 20ga choke supplied with the 20ga Turkey guns is a .565 constriction and is rated for TSS.” If you bought a Retay 20 gauge Turkey model, you already own a TSS-rated turkey tube, and the honest first step is to pattern it rather than replace it.

Everything below is for the hunter who has a Retay 20 gauge that did not come with that tube, or who patterned the factory tube and wants to try a different constriction.

The four tubes, side by side

Every value links to the maker page it came from. A dash means the maker does not publish that figure, and the score treats it as missing rather than assuming the best.

Why Carlson's TSS Turkey 38028 ranks first

Because it is the only tube on this page that a maker sells with the word Retay on it in 20 gauge. Carlson's TSS Turkey: RETAY 20ga page lists item 38028 at a 0.555 in exit, and the load statement is the same one Carlson's prints across the TSS line: “Optimized for Federal Premium Heavyweight TSS Turkey Loads but also work exceptionally well with other manufacturer's turkey ammunition (Smaller shot size 7-9).”

That pairing matters more in 20 gauge than in 12. A 20 gauge starts with fewer pellets than a 12, so tungsten is what turns it into a 40-yard gun rather than a 30-yard one. A tube cut for TSS in the thread your gun actually uses is the shortest path to a pattern that holds up, and Carlson's backs it with a lifetime warranty: “If any damage occurs to your choke tube, just package it up and mail it back to us for a replacement.”

The honest catch: one size, and Carlson's does not print on that page whether it is cut for Marapro or Crio Plus. Read Retay's model list above, then buy.

If your Retay is a Crio Plus gun

ACE, a Gordion from July 2023, or a 20 ga Gamelander — you are shopping the Benelli Crio Plus shelf, which is a much bigger shelf. Two picks here cover it.

Carlson's TSS Turkey item 38018 is the same tungsten cut at the same 0.555 in exit, just in the Crio Plus thread, so your patterns should behave the same way as a Marapro-gun owner's. Kick's Gobblin' Thunder is the ported, extended alternative: Kick's sells a Benelli Crio Plus 20G version, rates the line for “lead, TSS, or other non-toxic loads,” and offers 0.560 or 0.570 in. Kick's lists a Retay thread in 12 gauge only, so it is not an option for a Marapro 20 gauge.

The lead option nobody seems to stock

There is one more Retay 20 ga turkey tube in Carlson's catalogue, and we have not ranked it. Carlson's publishes a Long Beard Ported Turkey, Retay 20ga — item 70115, 0.568 in, ported, “specially designed to produce the best patterns when shooting Winchester's New Long Beard Turkey loads”. On paper it is the plated-lead answer for a Marapro gun and the most open constriction of anything here.

We left it out of the rankings because we could not find a current Amazon listing for that specific item number when we checked on 2026-09-28, and this site does not rank a product a reader cannot buy through the links we carry. If you want a lead tube for a Marapro Retay 20, buy it direct from Carlson's and pattern it against the factory .565 in tube you may already own.

Which constriction should you start with?

In 20 gauge the published range is narrow, which makes the choice easier than it is in 12. Indian Creek calls 0.555 in its standard for 20 ga and offers 0.562 and 0.570 in as alternatives in every model, including its #0017 Retay. Carlson's sells one size, 0.555 in, in both the Retay and Crio Plus threads. Kick's runs 0.560 and 0.570 in. And your factory Retay tube, if you have one, is 0.565 in.

A caution from a maker rather than from us: Trulock points out that “a choke of a given exit diameter is usually going to give a different pattern when used in guns of different bore diameters.” Retay barrels are not Remington barrels, so a number that works for somebody else's 20 gauge is a starting point and nothing more.

Prove it at 40 yards before the season, not the night before

Carlson's patterning instruction is a target big enough to hold a 30 in circle, starting at 40 yards, averaged over three to five targets. Indian Creek publishes a nine-step version: a 4 ft square target at 40 yards, find the centre of the pattern rather than your aiming point, trace a 10 in circle there and count the hits. Mississippi State University Extension puts the bar at 100 holes in a 10 in circle at 40 yards, and that number does not get easier because the gun is a 20 gauge. Buyer's guide: a Retay 20 gauge as a turkey gun

A 20 gauge semi-auto is a genuinely good first turkey gun: light to carry all morning, kind on the shoulder, and with modern tungsten shells capable of everything a 12 gauge does inside 40 yards. What it does not give you is margin. A 20 gauge payload has fewer pellets to start with, so the choke and the shell have to be right.

Four things to settle, in this order:

1. Identify your thread. Check Retay's own model list: ACE, post-July-2023 Gordion and Gamelander 20 are Crio Plus; pre-June-2023 Gordion, GPS-XL and Antalya are Marapro.
2. Check what came in the box. Retay says the extended Turkey tube supplied with its 20 ga Turkey guns is 0.565 in and rated for TSS. Pattern that before you buy anything.
3. Buy the shells, then the tube. In 20 gauge that usually means TSS, which points you at Carlson's 38028 (Marapro) or 38018 (Crio Plus).
4. Pattern at 40 yards and count the holes in a 10 in circle. Nothing above is true until your gun prints it.

On the makers that are not here: Trulock lists 20 gauge Pinhoti and Precision Hunter turkey tubes at 0.560 to 0.585 in but does not name a Retay thread on its turkey page. JEBS builds a 20 gauge Head Hunter, but its 20 ga fit menu covers Crio, Invector, Invector Plus, Mobl and Remington — no Retay option. Patternmaster lists a Retay Code Black Turkey in 12 gauge only. That is why this page is four tubes and not eight.
