How we picked
This page lists only turkey chokes whose maker publishes a load rating that includes lead. Each was scored on the choke rubric published with our First-Season Score: load compatibility 30%, constriction options 20%, thread fit coverage 20%, build and porting 15%, and maker guidance 15%. Every constriction, thread list, material and rating below was read on the maker's own page and links back to it. We do not pattern chokes ourselves, so no “pellets in a ten-inch circle” number on this page is ours.
If you already shoot tungsten, this is the wrong list and best turkey chokes for TSS is the right one. For a general ranking that mixes both, see best turkey chokes.
Why the lead-or-tungsten question comes first
A turkey choke is not a general-purpose part. It is a constriction matched to a pellet, and the two common turkey pellets behave differently enough that makers build separate tubes for them. Tungsten super shot is denser and harder than lead, so a TSS tube is usually a wider exit than a lead tube of the same gauge; a lead tube squeezes harder, because softer pellets deform and spread more.
That is why three of the five tubes here say in writing that they are not rated for TSS, and why Carlson's sells a Long Beard tube and a TSS tube as separate products in the same gauge. Buying the wrong one does not usually damage anything; it just means your gun patterns worse than the one you bought it to beat. The whole pellet argument is in TSS vs lead turkey loads, and what size pellet to pick afterwards is in what size shot for turkey.
The five tubes, side by side
Every value links to the page it came from. “Not published” means the maker does not print that figure, and the score treats it as missing rather than assuming it.
Why Carlson's Long Beard wins
The 12-gauge Long Beard scores 7.1, the highest on this page, for one reason that matters more to a first-season hunter than any constriction figure: Carlson's tells you which shells to buy with it. A tube designed around Winchester's Long Beard XR load turns the hardest part of setting up a turkey gun — guessing which of twenty boxes your barrel likes — into a starting point you can pattern on day one.
The 20-gauge version at 6.9 is the same tube and the same argument in five thread systems instead of nine, at a 0.568 in exit. Note the fitment trap Carlson's prints itself: the Winchester/Browning Invector/Mossberg 500 version does not fit the Winchester SX-2, SX-3, SX-4 or SXP. Read your barrel's thread before you read any review.
Both Tight Wad tubes score 6.2. They are rated for lead, copper-plated lead and HEVI-Shot, they install by hand without a wrench, and Primos sells them as the budget option in its own words — “hard on turkey heads not your wallet.” What you give up is material (chrome alloy steel rather than stainless), the warranty (one year against defects rather than lifetime), and any load chart at all.
Patternmaster's Code Black Turkey is the awkward one at 6.0. It is the best-built tube on the page — titanium-infused 17-4 PH stainless, canoe porting, a lifetime warranty, and twelve thread systems including the Retay and CZ Active — and it is the only one whose maker will not say what it is rated for beyond “turkey loads.” Our rubric puts 30% on load compatibility, so a tube that declines to answer the first question cannot win, however well it is machined.
What constriction a lead load wants
The 12-gauge tubes here land between 0.655 and 0.690 in depending on thread, and the 20-gauge tubes at 0.568 and 0.570 in. Those numbers are the exit diameter, and a smaller number means a tighter squeeze. A standard full choke in a 12 gauge is around 0.690 in, so a lead turkey tube at 0.660 in is meaningfully tighter — which is exactly the difference described in turkey choke vs full choke.
One thing worth knowing before you shop constriction: every tube on this page is sold in a single exit diameter per thread. That costs all five of them half the constriction-options score, and it is the one place the TSS tubes on this site do better. It also means you cannot tune the choke to the load — you tune the load to the choke, by buying three boxes and shooting paper, which is what how to pattern a turkey gun walks through.
Reading a maker's load rating honestly
Choke marketing is where turkey gear gets loosest, so three habits are worth building.
A performance claim about a pairing is not a claim about the tube. Carlson's says the Long Beard combination gives “10% greater penetration over standard lead shot at distances of more than 50 yards.” That figure describes a choke-and-load pair, in Carlson's testing, not a property the tube carries into your barrel with different shells.
A range claim is a ceiling, not an expectation. Patternmaster claims “up to 70 yards effective range.” No lead turkey load earns a shot at a live bird at that distance, and the honest limits are set out in how far can you shoot a turkey.
A missing rating is information. If a maker will not name the shot type, assume it has not been tested with the one you are holding, and pattern accordingly.

Buyer's guide: buying a lead turkey choke once
Settle the shot type before anything else
If you plan to shoot lead this spring, buy a tube with a lead rating. If you expect to move to tungsten within a season, buy the TSS tube now and shoot lead through it this year rather than buying twice — the lead pattern will be a little wider and still perfectly lethal inside 35 yards.
Match the thread, then the constriction
Thread system is a yes-or-no question and constriction is a preference. Find your barrel's thread first — your gun's manual or the factory tube's markings will tell you — and read the maker's fitment notes carefully, because the exceptions matter. Our model-specific pages cover the common guns: Mossberg 500, Remington 870 and Benelli.
Buy the shells with the choke
The single best thing about the Carlson's Long Beard tube is that it removes a decision. Buy the tube and two boxes of the load it was built for, pattern it at 40 yards, and you are finished with gear for the season. A tube with no named load means buying three or four different boxes to find the one your barrel likes.
Warranty is cheap insurance on a part you screw in and out
Carlson's and Patternmaster both publish lifetime warranties; Primos publishes one year. Chokes get cross-threaded, dropped and corroded, and a lifetime warranty on a small steel part is worth something real. Patternmaster's applies only to the original purchaser buying from the maker or an authorized dealer, which is worth knowing before you buy from a marketplace seller.
The first-season mistake: buying a choke instead of shooting paper
An aftermarket turkey choke is one of the cheapest real upgrades to a turkey gun, and it is still the second thing to do. The first is patterning the gun you already own, at the distance you actually shoot, with the shells you actually own. Most first seasons are lost to a gun nobody ever put on paper, not to a factory choke.
How we picked this
Scored on the specs that decide your season
Every pick is read off the maker's own specs, materials and instructions, then scored on a public rubric built around a first-season hunter: the sounds a call is made to produce and how it holds up in rain, a choke's load ratings and thread chart, the weights, pockets and seat heights you carry all morning. Each figure links straight to the page it came from, so you can check any pick in one click.
Scores come from that documented research with fixed bands, and prices come live from Amazon with the date they were checked. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best turkey choke for lead shot?
Carlson's Long Beard Turkey Choke Tube, on published evidence. Carlson's says it was designed to produce the best patterns with Winchester's Long Beard turkey loads, sells it in nine 12-gauge thread systems, makes it from 17-4 PH stainless steel and backs it with a lifetime warranty. It scores 7.1 of 10 on our choke rubric. The Primos Tight Wad at 6.2 is the budget tube that still publishes a lead rating.
Can you shoot lead through a TSS turkey choke?
Generally yes, and it is a safety-neutral question rather than a performance-neutral one. TSS tubes are usually a wider exit because tungsten pellets do not deform the way lead does, so lead through a TSS tube tends to pattern a little wider than lead through a tube built for it. Check your own maker's published prohibited-shot list, and pattern whatever combination you end up with.
What choke constriction is best for lead turkey loads?
The tubes on this page run 0.655 to 0.690 in in 12 gauge and 0.568 to 0.570 in in 20 gauge, which is where the makers themselves land for lead. Tighter is not automatically better: past a point, a hard squeeze on soft pellets blows holes in the pattern. Since every tube here is sold in one exit diameter per thread, the practical answer is to buy the maker's number and tune the load instead.
Is an aftermarket turkey choke worth it if I shoot lead?
Usually yes, and it is the cheapest meaningful upgrade to a turkey gun — a factory full choke is around 0.690 in in a 12 gauge, where a lead turkey tube squeezes to about 0.660 in. But pattern the gun you own first. A factory choke that puts enough pellets in a head-sized circle at 30 yards has already solved your problem.
Can I shoot steel shot through these turkey chokes?
No. Every maker on this page prohibits it in writing. Carlson's allows no steel larger than #4 and no slugs, sabots or buckshot; Primos says the Tight Wad is not designed for steel; Patternmaster says the Code Black Turkey is not safe for steel. If the same barrel goes duck hunting, that needs its own tube, which is the whole point of turkey choke vs duck choke.
Where do the specs on this page come from?
Constrictions, thread lists, materials, load ratings and warranty terms come from each maker's own product and warranty pages, and every figure in the tables links to its source. We do not pattern chokes, so there is no pellet-count claim of our own anywhere on this page, and the performance numbers quoted are attributed to the maker that published them.
