Ported vs non-ported turkey chokes: what the holes are really for

Ports are a recoil and muzzle feature, not a pattern feature. No choke maker claims otherwise on its own product page. Four tubes compared on what their makers publish, including one sold both ways and one whose porting is cosmetic.

What ports do, per the makers

A ported choke has holes or slots cut through the wall of the tube near the muzzle end. Gas escapes sideways through them just before the shot leaves the barrel. Here is what the four makers in this comparison actually publish about that, in their own words.

  • Kick's Industries describes the Gobblin' Thunder as an “extended, diagonally ported design for recoil reduction,” and its page on why its choke tubes are better explains the diagonal ports alongside the conical/parallel internal design. The Invector Plus 12 ga version is 3 5/16 in overall with a 1 1/2 in ported section.
  • Indian Creek publishes a count rather than a claim: 30 parallel ports on the Black Diamond Strike, and tubes that “require no tools and are easily hand-tightened.”
  • JEBS is the most useful exhibit in the whole argument, because it sells the identical multi-stage-bore Head Hunter ported or non-ported, and labels the ported option simply “Less Recoil.”
  • Carlson's does not port its Extended Turkey line at all, and does not apologize for it. Our own product notes list “not ported” as a con on that tube, and it still outscores two ported tubes here.

So the published case for ports is recoil, muzzle behavior and, with Kick's and Indian Creek, a tube you can fit and remove with your fingers. That is a real benefit on a gun that kicks: a 12 ga 3 1/2 in turkey load out of a pump sitting against a tree is one of the heavier recoil events in hunting, and recoil is what makes people lift their head off the stock.

What nobody claims they do

Read those four product pages again and notice what is missing. Not one of them says the ports tighten the pattern, add pellets to a 10 in circle, or extend effective range. The claims that do mention range belong to the tube's interior: Patternmaster credits its Separating Ring and canoe-porting with shortening the shot string, and JEBS points at its patented multi-staged bore. Those are internal-geometry claims, not hole-in-the-side claims.

One more honest note: we award porting a single point under “build” in our choke rubric, and nothing at all under load compatibility, constriction options or maker guidance. That is deliberate. A ported tube with no published load rating is still a tube with no published load rating, which is how the ported JEBS ends up last here at 5.8.

Four tubes, side by side

Three of these four fit the same thread family — the Browning Invector / Mossberg 500 pattern — so you can read them as actual alternatives for the same gun. The Kick's entry is the 12 ga line as a whole, which includes an Invector version.

Indian Creek publishes 30 ports and a 0.5 lb weight; JEBS publishes a 5 oz weight, four exit diameters and a ported-or-not choice, but no load rating at all.

Fake ports are a real thing

If you are shopping on looks, know that some tubes are machined to look ported without being ported. Our registry has one on the books: Patternmaster's Code Black Turkey in .410 is described as non-ported with “simulated” exterior porting that does not break through to the bore, and our own con line on that product says the exterior porting is cosmetic.

That is not a scandal — a .410 has very little recoil to reduce, and the tube is sold on its interior design. It is a reason to read the spec line rather than the photograph. If the ports matter to you, buy from a maker that says in writing that they go through.

How to choose, in three questions

  1. Does the maker publish a load rating that matches your shells? This is the question that should decide the purchase. Kick's says lead, TSS and other non-toxic; Carlson's Extended says lead, copper, nickel, bismuth and HEVI-Shot and never steel larger than #4; Indian Creek says lead and hybrid heavy loads and tells you to check the shell maker for TSS; JEBS says nothing. Shooting TSS through a tube not rated for it is how people damage chokes. Start at what choke for turkey hunting.
  2. How many exit diameters does your thread get? A tube offered in one constriction is a single guess at your barrel and load. Carlson's offers six for the Mossberg 500 thread, JEBS four, Indian Creek two, Patternmaster one.
  3. Then, if you are still tied, does it have ports? If you shoot 3 or 3 1/2 in magnums, or you have a flinch, take the ported one. If you shoot a 20 gauge, youth loads or a .410, the recoil argument mostly evaporates — see 20 gauge vs 12 gauge for turkey.

Two things ports are not: a reason to buy a tube your gun's thread does not take, and a substitute for a warranty. Carlson's publishes a lifetime replacement term and Kick's publishes no warranty terms at all, which is a genuine trade-off between these two.

The part that actually decides your range

Whichever tube you buy, the number that matters is on paper, not on the package. Pattern the gun with the shells you will hunt with, at the distance you intend to shoot, and let that set your maximum range rather than a manufacturer's effective-range claim. The step-by-step is in how to pattern a turkey gun, and the honest answer about distance is in how far can you shoot a turkey.

If your tube and your shells disagree, change the shells before you change the choke. A tube with six constrictions and a published chart, like the Carlson's here, is a cheaper way to chase a pattern than buying a second choke — and it is the reason a non-ported tube can out-rank two ported ones on our rubric without anyone claiming ports are useless.

How we picked this

Scored on the specs that decide your season

Every pick is read off the maker's own specs, materials and instructions, then scored on a public rubric built around a first-season hunter: the sounds a call is made to produce and how it holds up in rain, a choke's load ratings and thread chart, the weights, pockets and seat heights you carry all morning. Each figure links straight to the page it came from, so you can check any pick in one click.

Scores come from that documented research with fixed bands, and prices come live from Amazon with the date they were checked. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.
